“BRIDGE for Cities – Belt and Road Initiative: Developing Green Economies for Cities”

“BRIDGE for Cities – Belt and Road Initiative: Developing Green Economies for Cities” event organized conjointly by UNIDO and the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation. The annual “BRIDGE for Cities” event aims to advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals as well as the New Urban Agenda.

The 2nd “BRIDGE for Cities” event, which was held in September 2017, attracted over 650 participants from over 136 cities located in 67 countries.

Based on the success of the previous events, we are happy to share with you that the 3rd “BRIDGE for Cities” event will take place from 9 to 11 October 2018 at UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. The 3rd event will showcase concrete city cases including urban-industrial development challenges and solutions.

Four case cities – Trieste, Shanghai, Vienna and Chengdu – have been identified for the 3rd event to represent, respectively, the ideal-type of “sustainable city”, of “smart city”, of “liveable city” and of “park city”. Each case city will be the focus of a thematic session on the second day of the event and will organize a booth in the exhibition area to showcase successful projects in the urban development domain, both public- and private-driven.

VNCPC trained to improve the capacity of applying cleaner production in industry in Quang Binh

Recently, the Center for Industry Promotion and Trade Promotion of Quang Binh has cooperated with Vietnam Cleaner Production Center Co.Ltd. (VNCPC) to organized training to improve the capacity of applying cleaner production in the industry for local enterprises.

At the training, Assoc. Prof. Tran Van Nhan – VNCPC Director, introduced cleaner production and practices in Vietnam to raise awareness about the importance of further implementation to develop sustainable industry; At the same time, information on the challenges, benefits and lessons learned in practical application of cleaner production will be exchanged, promoting the implementation of the Cleaner Production Strategy for Industry in 2020 in Quang Binh.

This is a chance to create favorable conditions for production and business establishments in the province to improve the efficiency of the use of natural resources, raw materials, fuel and materials, reduce emissions, limiting the extent of pollution, protecting, improving the quality of the environment, human health and ensuring sustainable development.

It is known that in recent years, the Center for Industry Promotion and Trade Promotion Quang Binh has also implemented many activities to disseminate and raise awareness for the state management staff and managers at the enterprises on cleaner production. Therefore, to create conditions for state management units, enterprises and production establishments in the province to firmly grasp related policies and information on cleaner production, and at the same time to approach and popularize replication model applied cleaner production in industry.

VNCPC kicked-off the project “Complementation of Eco- Industrial Park Guidelines for Vietnam”

In the days of 20 and 21/6, with the financial of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) – the Bank of the World Bank (WB), the Vietnam Cleaner Production Center Co. Ltd (VNCPC) and Sofies (Switzerland) – an international sustainability project management and consulting firm have held kick-off conference the project Complementation of Eco- Industrial Park Guidelines for Vietnamin Saigon Hi-tech Park and Sonadezi Long Thanh Industrial Zone (Dong Nai).

The target of the project is to help enterprises in the industrial park and management board have information and specify the way to transform to the Eco Industrial Zone as the 82 Government Decree enable in 22/5/2018 – the policy for Management industrial parks and economic zones.

With the IFC support, the project will be completed the National Guidelines for the Development Eco – Industrial Zone to help MPI give the standard guidelines for Industrial parks, economic zones as well as enterprises to apply.


The project kick-off workshop was held in Ho Chi Minh city on 20/6.

Attending the kick-off ceremony at Saigon Hi-Tech Park, there were Head of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Hoai Quoc, representatives of 40 companies operating and investing here.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Hoai Quoc said that Ho Chi Minh City’s orientation was approved by the City’s Committee for building a smart city, green and sustainable development. In particular, building industrial zones and economic zones into models of ecological zones is a top priority. In the coming time, the Saigon Hi-tech Park Management Board is committed to working closely with the project and implementing enterprises in order to quickly transform into an eco- industrial park.

At Sonadezi Long Thanh Industrial Park, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan – General Director together with nearly 50 domestic and foreign enterprises operating here came to attend. In his welcome speech, Mr. Tuan said: Sonadezi Long Thanh was one of the first industrial estates in the country and there have been many policies successfully tested here before scaling up. Construction of Ecological Industrial Park is the right direction and in line with the orientation of Sonadezi Group as well as Dong Nai People’s Committee. Therefore, Sonadezi Long Thanh Joint Stock Company and companies in the industrial zone are very supportive and eager to participate in this project.

After hearing the experts about the purpose, activities and expected results, enterprises divided the discussion group and presented many useful solutions for enterprises to use. Resource efficiency, cleaner production (RE-CP) to reduce production costs and join industrial symbiosis. In addition, enterprises also proposed solutions to share resources in the same industrial zone for management consideration of investment.

1 million Euros to support Laos and Vietnam to implement the project “Plastic Recycling and Management”

On 23 May, the International Project “Plastic Recycling and Management” (Sea-plastic-edu) was launched in Hanoi. This is a project funded by Erasmus + Program, a training program of the European Union (EU) for 3 years (2018 – 2021), with the participation of 5 countries: Austria, Germany, Denmark, Laos and Vietnam. The project has a total budget of 1 million euros.

Attending the kick-off ceremony were representatives of the Austrian Embassy, ​​the Embassy of Germany, the Embassy of Denmark, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the leaders of Ha Noi National University, Europe and Vietnam enterprises.

Professor Nguyen Van Noi, Rector of the University of Natural Sciences, said that the project was based on the Erasmus + rule, with the aim to create links between Southeast Asia and Europe in training and practice. Training on plastic recycling in Laos and Vietnam.

The main objectives of the project are to: Support Vietnam and Laos universities in modernizing and enhancing higher education at engineering, bachelor and technician levels by establishing the educational concept of plastic recycling and waste management; Enhance the ability to recruit after graduation and entrepreneurial spirit of graduates and staffs of schools; Connect the academic and industrial world in the field of waste management.

After the launching ceremony, six main activities of the project will be implemented in Laos and Vietnam: Modernizing the existing curriculum; Establishment of two regional training centers for people working in the field of plastic recycling; Set up a training network on waste recycling; Train the trainers; Incorporate the concept of sustainable development into the discipline of waste management in master training; To raise the skills and qualifications of experts in waste management and technology transfer.
