The assignment aims at developing a technical guideline on the application of energy-efficient and cleaner production for shopping malls in improve business efficiency, increase energy efficiency and reduce environmental pollution, hence contributing to the implementation of the objective of “Cleaner Production Strategy in Industry until 2020” was approved in Decision No. 1419/QD-TTg on September 7th, 2009 and the “The National action plan on sustainable production and consumption up to 2020, with a vision to 2030” approved by the Prime Minister on January 11th, 2016.

In 2019, the project team conducted surveys at 5 shopping malls including BigC Hai Phong; BigC Ninh Binh; Hanoi’s Vincom centre Pham Ngoc Thach and Me Linh Plaza Ha Dong shopping centre; and Aeon Mall Long Bien shopping centre to evaluate the potential for application of energy efficiency and cleaner production and based on criteria such as data availability operation conditions. Vincom centre Pham Ngoc Thach was selected as a pilot for in-depth assessment.

Outputs

  • A manual for assessing cleaner production and energy efficiency for shopping centres and malls with useful information such as concepts, activities, inadequate environmental issues, as well as the methodology for implementing energy-efficient and cleaner production. This is a valuable reference for stakeholders such as Management Boards of shopping mall and supermarket industrial promotion and development centre of provinces, universities, etc.
  • The study of cleaner production and energy efficiency at a pilot shopping mall will provide typical energy-efficient and cleaner production options that can be referenced and applied at any supermarket or shopping centre/mall.
