  • Overall objective: By 2015, at least 50% of rattan processing in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam is sustainable, leading to environmental improvements, strengthened competitiveness, poverty alleviation and national economic benefits
  • Specific objective: By end of the action at least 40% of all targeted Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the supply chain are actively engaged in Cleaner Production of rattan products in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam and at least 15% of targeted processing SMEs are providing sustainable products to European and other markets, thus delivering a measurable improvement of this sector’s environmental performance
  • Inception and kick-off of the action as well as set up monitoring system
  • Engage with rattan pre-processors and traders to strengthen their capacity on village workshop management as well as CP through trainings and facilitate the establishment of business links along the supply chain
  • Introduce CP to processing SMEs through assessments and trainings
  • Introduce rattan certification to SMEs through trainings and support establishment of market links by improving product design capacity and interacting with retailers, e.g. at an international trade fair
  • Support the revision and better implementation of legislation through stakeholder workshops, piloting, providing legal advice and training
  • Implement a tailor-made communications strategy including media work, a dedicated website and a mobile exhibition
  • Deliver trainings to increase the partners’ capacity and assist them to set up associations of rattan processing SMEs
  • The action is fully operational, with monitoring system established
  • Rattan supply chains, including trans-boundary links, are institutionalized and are organized in a more efficient way
  • 300 SMEs are familiar with Cleaner Production (CP) of which at least 120 introduce concrete measures
  • As part of CP, at least 35 SMEs have credible certification for Chain-of- Custody (CoC) in place and at least 25 processing SMEs have started to export credibly certified rattan products from CP

  • Successful approaches and lessons learned for CP, and introduction to international markets, of credibly certified rattan products are effectively communicated as a general model for Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) and other natural resources
